On the 1st September, 2015, Finsbury Park Mosque opened its doors to the community, this time to discuss the important topic of Climate Change under the name of ‘Communities for the Climate’. The evening was hosted by the mosque’s chairman Mohamad Kozbar and was organised in partnership with Cafod, Pax Christi, and London Boroughs Faiths Network . This was also part of the ‘Pray & Fast month’ ahead of The United Nations Climate Change Conference which will be taking place in December of this year in Paris.

The event was very successful and was attended by over 80 people from the Muslim and Christian faiths. Talks were given by Fatima Said from Finsbury Park Mosque on Climate Change from an Islamic perspective and Barbara Kentish from the Christian perspective. This coincides with the publication of Islamic Declaration on Global Climate and Pope Francis’s letter on climate, Laudato Si’ which were mentioned by the speakers during the talk. It was delightful and inspiring to see the similarities and agreements in both of the talks and the goals that each of the faiths were working towards in order to better the environment and the world around us.

In addition to the topic of Climate Change, other related issues such as the current refugee crisis and the worldwide arms trade were discussed. The attendees also made some excellent contributions and suggestions for ways in which we can promote this issue and develop solutions for it by working as an inter-faith community.

Finally, The Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“If the Hour (the day of Judgement) is about to be established and one of you was holding a palm shoot, let him take advantage of even one second before the Hour is established to plant it.”
